Question of the Day: With texting, tweeting, cell phones, IM'ing, etc, do you think all of this technology helps or hinders relationships?

As I'm sure is the case with most of you, my first serious relationship was volatile, stressful and incredibly emotional. I undoubtably believe that if we had had the technology back then that we do now....whoa...we most likely would have broken up 50 MORE times than we already did! The convenience of hiding behind technology is without a doubt, gratifying; however, relationships are emotionally based and need human interaction to be sustained. Are we becoming increasingly disconnected from one another? Especially where romantic relationships are concerned?

  1. Emailing, IM'ing are both just a little less romantic than previous forms of staying in touch and I'm not sure how much they add. Twitter is so public, that, while it's fun, I'm not sure it's a relationship saver either. But there are two technologies that definitely make love in the '00's MUCH better: skype and texting. I like Skype because you can talk to each other and sense the other's body language and feelings so much better when you're far away. That's a no brainer.
Texting, on the other hand, is a surprisingly wonderful addition to the new love scene, I feel. Which is shocking, because really, it's so stunted and primitive compared to email. The reason I feel it connects people is because it's immediate, ubiquitous, private and personal. You can touch someone a block away or a continent away with a few private words, even if they're in a meeting, an airport, or even a tent 4 miles from the road (i really got some out there!). It may be the closest thing we have to a direct brain to brain connection short of some sort of interbrain USB cable! So definitely kick your texting skills into high gear when you enter the dating world. It's a must now.
